1920s & 1930s Entertainment, by Francis P. Weber

(From the Monthly Progress in 2005)

FRANCIS P. WEBER

In the 1920s and 1930s entertainment at the club consisted of our Maennerchor and Frauenchor (Men’s Choir and Women’s Choir) concerts along with Sunday Afternoon Kaffee Klatches. There were also two or three Maskenballs (Masquerade Balls). The club would give monetary gains to the most beautiful, funniest, original and groups of three or more. My mother made costumes for my brother Anthony, age 10, Adam, age 8, and me age 5. Adam and I were dressed like girls and Tony was a boy. Our costumes had large green clovers, as we were Irish children.

In the fall, there would be a Weinlesefest. Our club does not have these fruit festivals any longer, but the Bavarian VV do have the Weinlesefest now.

The club was fortunate in that we had a man namely Mr. Michael Stumpf, Sr. who directed any number of operettas. All the roles were sung by our members. I only remember a few of the young ladies namely, Kitty Rack, and Teresa Kirsch. One operetta which was performed was called “Wenn Der Himmel Voller Geigen” “When the Heavens Are Full of Violins”.

There were also plays performed by our members. I only remember one and it was “Der Fussball Koenig”. For these performances the hall would be filled with rows of folding chairs. The rows were eight chairs in length. After the performances the chairs would be folded up and placed against the wall. Then the dancing would commence.
