A Great Weekend in Akron, OH, By Michael Fricker

Over Memorial Day weekend a group from the club travelled in two vans to Akron Ohio for the National Donauschwaben Tournament hosted by the German Family Society. The players, the superfans and the Major and Major II staff that attended had a great time and represented the Deutsch-Ungarn well.

Congratulations go out to Milwaukee Sport club on winning the Major Division. Group play in this year’s competition ended with Cleveland Concordia in first with a (4-0-1) record and Milwaukee in second place with a (3-1-1) record. The final was a 1:0 win for the champion side that went the full regulation time plus overtime.

We also need to congratulate our sister club the Carpathia Kickers on winning the 2019 Peter Schock Cup! On Saturday, May 25, prior to the 5:00pm match the members of the German Hungarians gathered the member of the Carpathia Kickers. Werner Fricker III, then made a rousing speech presenting the new trophy, the Peter Schock Cup. Named for the founder and first president of our two clubs the inscription on the plaque reads “Any time these two clubs should meet on the field, the winner takes this trophy for a period of one year. When awarded it is customary that the winning side fill the cup for a toast!” That we did, though the match ended in a 0:0 tie, both sides lined up for penalty kicks and the Kickers came out on top! Congrats!

A great weekend it was, and Akron was a great host to us! On our way home on Monday, we as a club stopped in Shanksville, PA at the Flight 93 memorial. In a way it was a solemn and thoughtful way to end our trip. It was fitting to spend just a portion of that day remembering many who gave up everything so that we could continue our proud traditions.
