Manhattan Club: Penelope Old-Fashioned, by Michael Fricker

When Michael Kredler Fricker was born, my brother Werner brought to us a bottle of Whiskey. It was a Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel and was oh so smooth with an masculine oak. Similarly when Penelope Kristine Fricker came into the world, Werner brought a bottle of Traveller Whiskey, Chris Stapleton‘s collaboration with Buffalo Trace Distillery. The back of the label states:

“Good Whiskey is like a good song. It requires no explanation. One taste should tell you everything you need to know. No one has to tell you how to feel about it. You simply settle in & enjoy.

Then when we baptized Penny, Werner came with a new bottle I’d never seen before. Penelope Four Grain Bourbon, named after the daughter of it’s company founder. Like my little girl it’s sweet and comes in a pretty package.

Parents know that sentiment from the Traveller Whiskey is also true of the little ones that come into the world. No one has to tell you how to feel about them.

Equipment

  • Bar spoon
  • Mixing glass
  • Double old fashioned or rocks glass
  • Cocktail toothpick or cut off spear

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp. raw sugar
  • 1 tsp. water
  • 3 dashes angostura bitters
  • 2 oz. Penelope Bourbon
  • Cubed ice for stirring
  • Large round ice ball for serving
  • 2 Luxardo or other premium cocktail cherries

In the mixing glass place the spoonful of sugar, the spoonful of water and stir. Dash in your bitters. Add in your Penelope Bourbon. Stir with cubed ice until the sides of the glass begin to get cold to the touch. Then stir a little more. Strain over a large ice cube and garnish with cherries on a cocktail spear.

Settle in and enjoy in the company of the prettiest girl you can find.
