AKRON, OH – On Sunday, May 30, 2021 the United German Hungarians won their 4th US National Donauschwaben Championship in Akron, OH at the German Family Society Park taking home for the second time the Mike Talan Wanderpokal.
The club won the Championship Final in Penalty Kicks over Cleveland Concordia. Both teams played to win through the 50 minute regulation 10 minutes of overtime and Keepers on both sides made some stellar saves.
The United German Hungarians Major team finished the weekend with a 5-0-1 record. That single tie came against Cleveland Concordia during their first match of the weekend. The Philly side had two goal keepers splitting time in James Brett and Stevie Paul. Together they held tight on a clean sheet the entire weekend.
The club first won this tournament in 1990, at the Philadelphia Donauschwaben, and in 2011 and 2018 at their home field in Oakford, PA. This win in Akron marks the first time they took the Championship outside the Philadelphia area. Many fans and players noted a “breaking of the curse” on Sunday.
