News & Comments: July, 2026

If you haven’t been following along as we republish Francis P Weber’s “Philadelphia German Hungarians” column from the 2000s, you should be. It’s an evergreen series that tells of the past of the club from a unique perspective. Weber was born in Philadelphia to Banater immigrant parents and his time as part of the club spans the 1920s until 2008. He served the club from every angle be it culture, sports, fundraising, publicity, editorial and much more.

There has also been republishing of two articles by Emily Fricker from 2004 and 2008 about Schuhplattler Preisplattler team trips to the competition at the Bayerischer Lรถwe. As our team heads to Germany again this year it has been interesting to look back.

The 2026 Bayerischer Lรถwe which is on July 18 will be in Pullach near Mรผnchen. It is hosted by the Dโ€™Hochleitner Pullach. Many members and committee people are working hard on the travel arrangements. The dancers are getting Tracht together, and practicing as well. Break a leg!

In 2013, three groups came together to the USA on tour to the various clubs of the Landesverband der Donauschwaben. Our club along with Trenton and Philadelphia hosted two groups of the Landsmannschaft der Banater Schwaben: the Tanzgruppe from the Kreisverband Konstanz/Singen and the Tanzgruppe from the Kreisverband Esslingen. Traveling with them that year was the Freiburg based band Eisenbahner Musikanten. We held an event titled “Schwaben Abend” which was a great success at our club in Oakford. Many of our members saw these new friends made again on Labor Day at the Treffen in Detroit at the Carpathia.

KV Esslingen was founded in 1985 with the dance group officially forming in 1988. Their website states (translated from German):

The aim of the group work is to cultivate and pass on Banat customs and traditions. This is done primarily through folk dance, poetry, singing plays, nursery rhymes, and amateur dramatics โ€“ but crafts and DIY projects are also part of it.https://banater-schwaben-es.de/

Well it is 13 years later and this time the Banater Schwaben from Esslingen are visiting again. This time they will bring with them the President of the Weltdachverband der Donauschwaben, Jรผrgen Harich. Save the date, August 21 when we will host Schwaben Abend II.
