Monthly Progress, Volume 60, No. 2 โ€“ February 2005

Our Monthly Progress

A contest to name the new newspaper was announced in the first issue, (January, 1946). The newspaper was tentatively entitled “Monthly News.” The name contest deadline was march 5th. Any member was eligible to enter and the winner would win a $25.00 Savings Bond. Each newspaper had a double numbered stub printed and to avoid any unfairness, the upper stub was sent to the editor with the suggested name while the person kept the matching bottom stub. There were seven judges representing each section.

In the April 1946 issue the new name was announced as “Monthly Progress” and the stub was number 2002. The winner was unknown and asked to contact the editor.

In the May Issue, it was announced that the winner of the name contest was Julius Jusits. All contributors were thanked for the many suggestions. There have been many Editors and/or Co-Editors. They are:

Each editor has left their mark on our newsletter. All have tried to bring an interesting and informative newsletter to our membership. I think we are succeeding. The newsletter is also a way to preserve our history. We welcome any ideas and suggestions that any member may have. As the present editor, I would like to be able to bring more soccer information to our readers. Anyone interested to undertake this task?

EDITORโ€™S NOTE: this was written and originally published in Monthly Progress, Volume 60, No. 2 โ€“ February 2005.  It has been re-published here in 2026 with minor edits.

The Monthly Progress masthead received a new look in 2002 with a design by Joe Hartmann. It was later refined by Dieter Abendroth and his staff at Anchor Printing. In 2004, we began printing the newsletter in-house, and on April 1, 2005, we started distributing it electronically to our members.

Emily Fricker served as editor from 1981 through 2014. In total, there have been 14 editors, with Emily Fricker holding the longest tenure at 33 years.

In 2021, we transitioned fully to publishing the Monthly Progress in this newsโ€‘blog format here at http://www.ughclub.us.
