Dancing Around: Phoenix 95th Anniversary & Oktoberfest, by Michael Fricker

Most of our interactions and dealings with the First German Sport Club Phoenix happen on the soccer field or in meetings about the soccer administration.

Yes, from time to time our members attend each other’s events and enjoy them quite a bit. We typically also both take part in the Steuben Parade in Philadelphia as well. Recently our dance group has practiced quite often on Tuesday nights at the Phoenix.

Mike Boess, the Phoenix president said on Saturday, September 17 at their Oktoberfest and 95th* Anniversary, “We truly are a sports club.”

A sports club with a German background the Phoenix held an Oktoberfest and celebration of their 95th anniversary in their wooded picnic grove for members and friends. Our Children’s Cultural Group and some of our older dancers performed a few dances at the affair and a great time was had by all. Music is always great to listen and dance to with the wonderful arrangements from the Philly German Brass.

Ruth Kreutzer Herbert introduced our group, and we very much appreciate the support she gives our dancers over and over again. With many of our members on a phenomenal trip in Europe I think dancing at events like we did at Phoenix shows the breadth and abilities of our club. We can have folks enjoying events, celebrating, dancing and having that much fun on two separate continents.

We may be rivals on the soccer field, competing with Phoenix for the better goals, wins, and championships, but the wonderful thing about clubs like ours is that off the field we can truly say we are friends!

*COVID-19 prevented the club from celebrating their 95th in 2021 so the event was held this year.
